Motion-Sensing capabilities moving to Consumer Electronics

November 9, 2006 The pictured object is a TV remote control, designed to be much easier to use than that array of buttons you currently use that make a piano accordion look simple. The Loop is Hillcrest's first Freespace-enabled product, a bracelet-shaped TV remote control with just two buttons and a scroll wheel. Users hold The Loop in one hand, and it translates their motions into on-screen cursor movements. Using the scroll wheel and the two buttons, users can browse through TV channels or change the volume. Motion-sensing has been in use in computer games for some time, offering a more immersive, intuitive experience - consumer electronics will be next - for sure! Read More

Sanyo’s 42 inch Weatherproof LCD Monitor

November 5, 2006 It costs more than three times its non-weatherproof 42 inch equivalent in the Sanyo range, but the CE42LM4WPR flat panel 42 inch LCD Monitor has truly unique qualities which have the potential to open up the outdoor display and advertising market. Suddenly advertising, information services, and promotional activities can be empowered by the use of a 42 inch display at open-air events in all weather and in harsh environments, such as dusty or humid conditions. The ruggedised (our words not theirs, so don’t go dropkicking it around the place) screen now has IP56 weather-resistant accreditation making it viable for a range of industrial and architectural applications including in-factory information services, outdoor home usage in courtyards and pools areas as well as, commercial applications such as clubs and digital signage. The most expensive TV in the world

October 28, 2006 On display for the first time at the recent IFA show in Germany and also in New York earlier this month at an exhibition promoting Italian craftsmanship was the Yalos Diamond, a EUR 100,000 (US$130,000 in round figures) television set by Neapolitan (from Naples) Keymat Industrie s.p.a. The 40 inch LCD TV has provision for 1080i and 720p high definition picture formats and is as technologically sound as is humanly possible with a picture contrast ratio of 1200:1. The really expensive bit is the workmanship, the design and the fact it’s plated in white gold and studded with 160 diamonds (4 gm) of diamonds. Read More

The world's most expensive chocolates

October 26, 2006 It’s one of those days for quirky news, and they don’t come much quirkier than the products of Swiss company DeLafee International which creates the most expensive chocolate in the world. DeLafee’s Swiss chocolate pralines are covered with 24 carat edible gold leaf hand-applied to each chocolate. Not surprisingly, there’s no economy pack, with the Intimacy Box costing US$36.90 and containing two pralines (pictured), while the celebration Box of eight is US$98.40. Why is the gold edible? All gold is apparently edible, being totally safe when ingested and famous for its non-allergenic properties (otherwise it wouldn’t be used in tooth fillings). Both the European Union and United States authorize the use of gold to decorate food products and in several cultures gold is regularly used in foods. India is the world's largest consumer of gold in food products, eating its way through 12 metric tons of gold per year. Gold leaf is used to decorate pastries, which the wealthy offer as gifts for special celebrations like weddings or holidays. In France and Italy, celebrity chefs use gold leaf to decorate their most refined dishes. In Japan, gold leaf is mixed with sake on New Year's Eve to bring good luck and prosperity for the coming year and in Europe the same tradition apparently exists with champagne, though we can’t vouch for either practice. Happy Thirtieth Birthday to the VHS Video Format

October 11, 2006 Monday October 9 marked the thirtieth birthday of VHS Video, the videotape format that won the battle with Sony’s Betamax to become the global defacto standard for home video recording and has sold 900 million tape decks to date. Through the ability to view television programs at a later time or date, VHS video greatly enhanced the freedom of lifestyle for consumers. In addition, the technology made it possible for consumers to view movies in the home as well as shoot video and communicate with each other using camcorders. VHS video technology had a major impact on many fields including the electronics industry and the visual entertainment industry starting with the movie industry. It also had a major impact on education and the arts. The day saw Victor Company of Japan (JVC) awarded a prestigious IEEE milestone for development of the VHS Video, having released the first commercial VHS Deck (pictured) on October 9, 1976. IEEE Milestones honour achievements in electrical, electronic and computer engineering, singling out those achievements that have had a significant social and historical impact.

HD-ILA 110 inch Prototype Rear Projection TV

October 3, 2006 The first thought that crossed our mind when we saw JVC’s HD HD-ILA Hybrid rear projection television prototype was that if screens get much bigger, we’ll need bigger houses. At 110 inches (2.8 meters diagonally) we’re not surprised that it is the world’s largest design study prototype Full HD 1920x1080 Hybrid TV and wonder if, like the megapixel race with digital cameras passing 5MPX, the 100 inch mark is now big enough and let’s get on with reducing the price. That’s also on the cars, as JVC has been developing D-ILA technology since the 90’s, and now the expertise gained from this efforts is being used to create superb consumer home cinema hybrid rear-projection and front projection systems that are very cost-effective and larger than their LCD and plasma competion. At the heart of its imaging engine, the prototype uses three 0.7" 1920 x 1080 pixel Full HD D-ILA (LCOS) devices that deliver a native resolution of 2 megapixels for remarkably high image definition. One of the primary advantages of D-ILA devices is that it eliminates grids or the “screen-door effect”; offering a high aperture ratio of more than 90% to ensure smooth, film-like images. Read More

The Acoustic Wave music system II - big sound from a small package

September 15, 2006 Not long ago, filling a room full of sound meant half filling it with equipment. Then in 1984, the original Bose Wave Music System awoke an industry with great sound no-one expected from something so small. The Wave radio followed in 1993 and became the world’s most advanced, sweetest sounding clock radio, gaining a CD player in 1998. The secret to the wave radio’s incredibly rich sound was the length of the wave guide – an incredible 26 inches per channel, somehow squeezed inside the tiny form factor. Now there’s a new model and folded inside the briefcase-sized Acoustic Wave music system II is an 80 inch waveguide chamber precisely tuned to the speakers, so it amplifies sound just as a flute amplifies a small breath of air. The new US$1079 system hasn't changed in size, still fits almost anywhere in your home, and is easily controlled from across the room by a credit card-sized remote. It accommodates your MP3 player, plays your home-burned CDs as well as regular discs, has an AM/FM radio and you can add an optional US$300 5-CD changer. As a bonus, it travels easily with its optional US$150 carry-bag and goes portable with the optional US$16 12V cigarette lighter cord and/or US$150 power pack.

Logitech Wireless DJ Music System - US$250 plus $80 a room

August 9, 2006 In keeping with its history of introducing cutting edge computer peripherals (such as the first cordless mouse, trackball etcetera), Swiss-based Logitech has unveiled a wireless DJ Music System, which makes it easy to stream digital music from a PC to any stereo system or powered speakers and control it all from the long-range Wireless DJ remote. The system plays any PC audio format, including MP3, iTunes (AAC), WMA, Internet radio and podcasts and the Wireless DJ remote with its display and scroll wheel, makes it easy to navigate an entire music collection from anywhere in the home. According to a recent worldwide survey, 40 percent of online households play music on their PC and 33 percent listen to Internet radio streams. However, less than 10 percent of these people are playing this music through their stereo. Existing solutions that bridge this divide are complex to set up, support only a limited number of music formats, or are priced out of reach for most consumers. That’s about to change as the Logitech Wireless DJ Music System will be available next month for US$250 with additional Wireless Music System Add-On Receivers going for US$80 each (one per room to a total of four). LCD TV with 120Hz Refresh Rate

June 30, 2006 Competition imporoves the breed and the LCD screen continues to improve in both size and picture quality. One of the traditional weaknesses in LCD television performance is in the area of delivering crisp, fast action imagery, which can be significantly improved with higher refresh rates. JVC introduced the world's first 120Hz LCD TV last year (Q3, 2005) in Japan, and earlier this week announced plans to offer the technology in the US market. JVC's Clear Motion Drive technology produces images at 120 frames per second (120Hz), double the typical rate, and inserts an interpolated image. The result is a significant reduction in blurring or ghost images. JVC will offer Clear Motion Drive in the 37-inch LT-37X987, to be available in August, and the 32-inch LT-32X987, to be available in October. Both sets offer 1366 x 768p native resolution and JVC's fifth generation D.I.S.T. (Digital Image Scaling Technology) Genessa 32-bit CPU video processing, which seamlessly upscales any video source to display at 768p. Read More

Consumer Electronics' role as “king of home entertainment” threatened in near term

February 13, 2006 2006 According to IDC's latest Digital Home research, "Australian Digital Home Convergence: One Box to Rule All", the proliferation of digital media is changing the way entertainment reaches consumers. As the demarcation lines between delivery platforms such as the TV, Internet and mobile devices blur, entertainment does not necessarily reach consumers via TV broadcast only, but also through the Internet. Consequently, broadband service providers (BSPs) and IT vendors will capitalise on this trend and compete for the control of the home, thereby threatening Consumer Electronics (CE) vendors' position as king of home entertainment in the near term. The 360 degree LED television

November 29, 2005 If you’re looking for a new centrepiece for your new entertaining area, the new 360 degree LED display from Dynascan offers exactly that – quite literally. Taiwanese-based Dynascan has been developing the 360 degree LED display for several years now and it is initially being used as an advertising medium in shopping centres and public areas, with an outdoor version just launched too. The first time you see one of the screens you’ll understand what the fuss is about – the quality, colour, contrast and definition is extraordinary and the screen is absolutely huge – the third generation of the new LED screens is being introduced at present with the largest being a 2.5 metre high, 5.46 metre circumference screen and capable of being viewed clearly from 30 metres away. Interestingly, the screens can actually display one image around the full 360 degrees, so it would be possible to use them as output for a 360 degree camera. In their commercial configuration the screens are usually configured as three identical images, with each image claiming 120 degrees of the surface. Two 180 degree screens is also possible and … if the ambitious Tholos Project hadn’t died, it would have had an ideal screen.

Tony Hawk's SIRIUS Satellite Radio Show Integrated into Video Game

October 19, 2005 We sincerely apologise for the using the word convergence in this story (and the previous one and maybe even the next story too) – it’s just that there’s a lot of it going round. If you haven’t heard of skateboarder, entrepreneur and living legend Tony Hawk then you’ve probably been in a coma for the last decade. Hawk the youth icon gets a mention because his latest American Wasteland video game hits the stores today and includes a unique cross-media integration and promotion with his weekly SIRIUS Satellite Radio show. The tight integration and promotion will assist in the migration of an entire cultural subset to the new satellite medium – while skateboarders play the best selling (it will be because all the previous ones have been) game for hundreds of hours, their brain will be hypnotised, x-rayed, tattooed and thoroughly impregnated with the sounds, interface and benefits of satellite radio – and to think they used to worry about the effects of subliminal advertising.
