July 30, 2007 Mobile phone penetration rates around the world are showing up some interesting trends - notably developing markets are selling more phones than ever but making less money as competition tightens. Developed markets are seeing a strong swing away from basic handsets toward more advanced Smartphones – a trend that will only be enhanced by the huge popularity of mass-market targeted handsets like the iPhone, which are starting to make these devices attractive to the consumer market as opposed to just business customers. Other interesting trends include the increasing number of dual-mode WiFi/Cellular phones that can seamlessly switch between local wireless internet connections and 2G cell phone networks to make optimal use of the economic efficiency of the former and the broad coverage of the latter. The other iPhone: Linksys' cordless landline with in-built Skype support
Image Gallery (8 images)
July 9, 2007 Linksys has stepped into the market with an iPhone of its own - it's nothing to do with Apple's hysterically successful new mobile unit though. The Linksys iPhone is a dual-mode telephone that can operate like a normal landline or hook up to your computer to make or receive peer-to-peer internet voice calls using a Skype client that's loaded directly into the handset. While the quality of Skype connections can range from crystal-clear to highly dodgy, the prices (free worldwide Skype-to-Skype and very cheap international/long distance calls) have made it an extremely popular way to stay in touch; many look upon Skype as the landline version 2.0. The no-frills Linksys iPhone lets you make and answer calls from the landline and Skype in one integrated unit. It looks to be a fantastic tool for heavy Skype users, and will no doubt encourage others to make the switch to internet telephony. Read More

Google becomes the world’s most valuable brand
Image Gallery (2 images)
June 4, 2007 We are all familiar with brands and we have all developed long term relationships with these consistent names. Every day we all make choices about which brands we interact with and each of us has our own relationship with the brands we choose – creating a consistent and ultimately worthwhile relationship with the client/customer is an incredibly complex process. Every interaction with the brand helps to define our view - is it reliable, is it the best, does it reflect who I am? Put all those thoughts together and you vaguely define the incredibly complex brand organism. The second annual BRANDZ Top 100 Most Powerful Brands ranking was announced recently and the world has a new heavyweight champion. As a commercial entity, the number one spot is the holy grail, and the new champion is, astoundingly, Google. Millward Brown’s unofficial world championship ranking for brands ascribes Google a brand value of US$66 billion, 50% more than Coca Cola and double that of Toyota, McDonald’s, Nokia or American Express. The rise to the top of the heap took less than a decade with the final ascent seeing Google rocket past General Electric (founded 1878 - US$62 billion), Microsoft (1975 - US$55 billion) and Coca-Cola (1885 - US$44 billion). A free summary of the report is available for download ... Read More

Concept to prototype in three days
Image Gallery (4 images)
January 15, 2007 With concept-to-showroom times being cut from years to months in recent times, one wonders just how quickly the development process can be carried out. One very ambitious and ultimately successful promotion at MacWorld Expo really pushed the envelope in this regard. Product development company mophie successfully turned the show floor of MacWorld ’07 into an open-source product development space where in less than four-days MacWorld attendees saw doodled concepts become actual prototypes.
